How Ayurveda Keeps My Mind & Body Healthy Every Day

My Story

Cooking and baking, entrepreneurship, and wellness are all in my DNA. My Russian great-grandparents, who once owned a mini empire of bakeries in NY State, came to the U.S. in the early part of the 20th Century, bringing with them ancient curative treatments like cupping (bankes, as it is called in Yiddish) and delicious recipes for Jewish classics like matzoh ball soup and kreplach (dumplings) that remain family favorites to this day!

Unfortunately, my DNA is also responsible for a host of health issues. I’ve always looked for cures that treat the root cause of my ailments, and not just the symptoms. More than 20 years ago, I was introduced to Ayurveda, which literally means “life science” in Sanskrit, and the approach seemed intuitive and smart – harmony of the mind and body through the use of herbs, oils, fresh food, and incorporating some very easy lifestyle changes.

My New pAth

It became clear to me that my genes and my passions were aligning to put me on a career path as an Ayurveda Wellness Counselor. It made sense since I already had so many friends relying on me for both wellness tips and delicious healthy meals!

Ayurveda is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s a customized plan that addresses what makes you who you are, including diet, stress level, lifestyle, and medical and family history. An Ayurvedic lifestyle can aid in the reduction of stress, correct digestive imbalances, help maintain a healthy weight, improve sleep, reduce inflammation, and strengthen the respiratory and immune systems.

I am my own best advertisement for an Ayurvedic lifestyle. I’ve gone from borderline hypertension to a consistently healthy blood pressure, my seasonal allergies are now barely noticeable, and the PTSD I suffered for years – I’m a sexual assault survivor – is no longer an issue largely due to meditation, daily Ashwagandha and restorative herbs and oils.

My healing journey has inspired me to heal others. I’ve partnered with Doctor of Ayurveda Medicine (A.D.), Kim Povey and together we are building the Sangha Wellness Center and B&B in Upstate NY. I’m completing certification in Hotel Management at Cornell University, the top program in the US, and I’m excited to be accepted to the prestigious wmnsWORK Tourism Accelerator. I will ensure that Sangha is the place where your mind, body and spirit are renewed.

Meet the Team

I’m so excited to be collaborating with Cara as well!

  • Ayurvedic Chef

Cara Burian is an Ayurvedic chef who believes that true health stems from not only the food we eat, but how we’re able to digest that food. She holds an Associate’s degree in Hospitality Management, a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, is a certified Ayurvedic Counselor and a recent graduate of the Ayurvedic Nutrition and Culinary Training (ANACT) program.

During her time working in the restaurant industry and learning about Western nutrition, Cara could feel that she wasn’t being given the full picture of what it means to use food as a way to maintain health. Once Ayurveda entered into her life one fateful day, she dove headfirst into studying the ancient science and hasn’t looked back. Now, her goal is to spread this knowledge to as many people as possible through delicious Ayurvedic inspired food, written word, and private catered events.
